FORD GENERAL CLOTHING located at 1712 North Wells
High Quality European clothes hand picked from the owner, who happens to have dual citizenship both Italian and American, is a real treasure. I happened upon it on my snowy walk on the 28th while I whined about Chicago's great neighborhood stores being closed. In the charming section of downtown Chicago in between the OLD TOWN signs swinging  at the both exit and entrance of the neighborhood I found it. To see some real great styles, please visit or if you are stuck inside check out their instagram:  https://www.instagram.com/ford_general/     +1-312-735-0234

Patrick Henry, the boss, tells me that he and his wife plan on carrying women's clothes in the future; as yet, they have high quality European men's clothing and children's clothing-mostly because they have two young children themselves.
Patrick says, "I designed the entire store myself, yet looking back sometimes wish that maybe I should of hired a designer. It's all me and I found the two old wooden apothecary shelves in Brooklyn and brought them here. They are 130 years old. Many women walk into my store and when they see that I only have men's clothing and shoes, they love to wander back to the apothecary shelves to check out my skin care products. It's funny that they buy these and since they tell me they wish we had women's clothing, too, we decided to start carrying some selective pieces."

"Since I am Italian and have both Italian and American citizenship, I wanted to bring part of my heritage here with me to Chicago. I love the craftsmanship of the European clothing lines and am very careful to find unusual pieces to showcase here. The people seem to love it."altText

And one idea to keep in mind about the Italian jacket and the Italian suits, they're made light, look light, feel light and they fit close to the body, which is one of the reasons many men love the Italian style. The jackets are less structured than the British ones and the American ones which tend to traditionally be more tough and rugged fitted And the typical Italian pants give a more sleek smooth look to the body, probably why the Italians are so famous in the fashion world!
You know when I first tried finding Merkel's, since my love is from Germany and Angela Merkle is the Chancellor, I entered the bar next door during a Sunday, the Super Bowl Sunday, and outside was the Trolley fun car filled with people going paintballing dressed in Camouflage outfits...true story. The owner of the "other bar" yelled, "We're not Merkel's it's next door quit coming in here asking for Merkel's!" so I kind of figured that the paintballers were German and had already run into the bar asking for Merkel's! Yep!
"We have specials everyday we are open, just look on our website, and the people especially love the Trivia Fridays, which is basically starting at 7:30pm every Friday and great drink specials with food and fun."http://merkleschicago.com/      LOCATED AT 3516 CLARK STREET

"You know it is a friendly bar, and I try to give some great specials to introduce the bar to people, such as the Wings Wednesday if you come in have a couple of beers every wing is only 50 Cents and that gives you a taste of our food and of our great beer.   I used to only have local Craft beers and American beers such as the Miller Lite and Bud Lite, but now I am thinking of introducing a German tap beer, since Germans always come in saying that their President is Merkle, although it is a different spelling, and others come in asking for Guinness! It is very difficult around Wrigley Field to find any beer except American!"  says the very charming owner, Mr. Bishop, in a 2 hour long conversation about the forming of his bar!
"It's funny since I was laid off my software engineering job at the company of Motorola 15 years ago.  I started at the door here, then waiting on people, then bartending and finally managing and after about 8 to 9 years, finally saved enough money to be a partner at Merkel's. Last year I am happy to say that I bought the bar 100% mine. So, sometimes when you are fired from your job, good things happen to you!" https://www.facebook.com/pg/MerklesChicago/photos/?ref=page_internal
HEY IT IS A BASEBALL CUBBY'S BAR!
They say that they love customers bringing in 100 year old baseball cards! The bar, by the way is named after the famous baseballer named Fred Merkel who actually played for the Cubs the year after they won the World Series in 1908! Perhaps because of Mr. Merkel, you have to google ithttp://merkleschicago.com/     You know during the Cubs season we are open around 11:30am on the 1.00pm games and at least 2 hours before every game otherwise. People come from everywhere in the world to see a game at Wrigley field and I am more than happy to introduce them to the drinking before the game culture!," laughs Mr. Bishop who says, "We have fun here!"

 LOCATED AT 3516 CLARK STREET
The bar is a favorite of locals and sport's fans and Mr. Bishop says, "You know on Friday night you should come here about 6.30pm and stay to do the Trivia. That is when you see the locals and meet some very nice people and basically enjoy the casual culture of sports Chicago. For some reason we are always busy, and I am thankful for that. Maybe since I'm a good guy and my team is very nice. We care about people and always try to help out. Plus you are only 2 blocks from the Cubs Stadium, the Wrigley Field, which is famous around the world...that helps!"
And if you are a nice guy(or girl) and a person who loves to work with people, come say hi to Mr. Bishop who would love to hire you! PS Must show kindness and actually speak nice to guests!
LOCATED AT 5 WEST HUBBARD STREET, the SuperSports Bar is open til 5:00am everyday.
                     Mother Hubbard's Sports Pub
Located at 5 West Hubbard Street, if you all want to come in to Mother Hubbard's be prepared to be in Sport's Heaven! "Every television has sports, yet at the Super Bowl every television had the SuperBowl, a small group of 5 people came in and asked to watch the women's basketball game. We turned on a television for the women! You know we are known as the Sport's Bar that is for everybody," says Parker.            Image result for mother hubbards chicago sports bar

You know it is all about the Sports, literally, they have about 36 televisions with Sports playing til 5:00 am every night...that is right, it is a Sports Bar that is kitty corner form the Hilton Garden on State Street, one block Rock Bottom Brewery, and it is continual Sports all day everyday. If you come in and ask for a certain Sports Team, a ERC Rally, a Soccer Barcelona and Rome, a obscure sports station from around the world, they find it. "We have so many cable boxes, you wouldn't believe it. We even have cable boxes in the basement, that is how many we have. Every hotel in the downtown area of Chicago knows that they can recommend Mother Hubbard's to their guests, and we can find what you want. One time a New Zealand group came and told us of a station we never heard of, and we made a call. 15 minutes later, they were happily sitting at a table facing their favorite sport team watching the games," says one of the two young partners, Parker, who I met on Saturday. Thirsty Thursday here at Mother Hubbard’s! Put on those snow boots and warm up with a beer - doors open until 4am tonight and every night •

I wanted to open the neighborhood bar and all my friends the week before I opened kept asking me when Derno's was opening and I would say to my friends that it isn't named Derno's. But, I finally just named it Derno's which is my nickname. That bar is a neighborhood bar with specials such as wings and special priced beer. The one here is a Sports bar and we have the distinct honor of being named the best pterodactyl wings in the world from CBS Sports.  It is because our wings are three sided and huge. You have to come in on Wednesdays when we have the wing day or since you said you have eaten Chicago Chicken wings everyday since coming to Chicago you can try these today, although it is National Pizza Day!" he says.                                                                                      Mother Hubbard's Sports Pub in Chicago, IL 60654 | Citysearch

you gotta come in for the pterodactyl wings, which is what CBS named these. People love our wings and me and Jake have a great time pushing as the envelope on sports channels and pub food!" says Parker.

"You know the neighborhood here is right downtown and it has many famous clubs on the same street and restaurants, including Harry Carey's, yet we are the only CASUAL SPORTS BAR that is open everyday til 5:00 am. So if you have a early morning flight and you want to come hang out here and drink a beer and eat some wings then catch the train or taxi to the airport instead of sleeping in a hotel for a few hours, be our guests! We have a great group that comes in at the wee hours. They're really fun and of course the camaraderie happens here since it is about your favorite sports teams. In a late bar or a club you don't really have a chance to socialize with strangers, yet Sports teams seem to get people talking to each other." says Parker.
What do I love about Derno's Pub Neighborhood Drinking Place...didn't I just say! Okay, I love the wings and pizza, the cool and fun and crazy bartenders and the wild laughing guests who are always at Derno's. Just thought I'd show you the famous pizza and wings...the beer has local breweries and American staples and of course Maplewood Brewery beer!     https://www.orderdernos.com/Derno's - Derno's added a new photo. | Facebook

I went to the place with friends and when the opportunity arose, I grabbed it. About 6 months ago, I asked Parker, who is a expert in real estate, to partner with me. He is great at marketing and knows many people around Chicago and I am good in the bar scene. We make great partners!" says Jake.

They originally opened the Brewery which is a first of its kind in the Chicago land region of having the brewing and the distillery under the same roof. It opened in 2014, after Adam had become a lawyer and Chelsea a doctor, and Adam partnered with Kevin Holl, Ari Megalis head brewer and Paul Megalis CFO. The Brewery started having a great reputation and 3 years after the brewery started they opened the Lounge, which is a adjoining Pub like atmosphere where you can sit and drink their beers. They are now distributed in 5 additional states and in Illinois.
As I admired the very cool Brewery, Adam asked if I wanted to taste some of the beers. And of course I would say yes:)         I tasted a couple and he gave me a couple of the original PUG logo'd IPAs and away I went happy to be equipped for my week in Chicago!  The beer is probably becoming the number one beer in every Pub and Restaurant and I am very happy for my niece. Hope you do a visit or especially since Covid, grab one from a store.

" I guess how I would describe my bar is a place where everybody can come and talk to each other. It is not a sports bar. I don't want it to be a sports bar and when my father started the bar in the early 1960s, it was a bar that is a safe place for women to come to if they are alone. Of course, they could come if they had companions, too, but my father wanted a place where a young lady would feel comfortable and safe. Here it is. My mother was a American Airlines stewardess," says Bob McGuire as we talk and Dominque starts laughing and corrects him,"They call stewardesses flight attendants now." Bob laughs and says, "Okay, flight attendant. Either way, before the bar opened, my dad and his friends would have parties and all the flight attendants would come and party. I guess after becoming friends with everybody, he wanted the women to feel comfortable. He opened the bar and it became the first women's empowerment bar before it was trendy!" he says and we start laughing. I thought it great. A real pioneer and say that with a name like "BUTCH MCGUIRE" I wouldn't associate the name with a feminist! Butch sounds like a real man's man you know complete with all the sports on television. Bob says,"You know, when my dad had the bar he used to walk around the bar and turn all the televisions off! That is how much he didn't like television. I now honestly have 1 less television than my dad did! The bar is a restaurant now since late 1968 and children with their family are welcome. After 8.00pm it is a adults only."
                         https://butchmcguires.com/

"Basically it is a drinking bar, a neighborhood bar where people can come and try the local beers of Chicago and the local food at a very reasonable price. I'm not here to make you spend all your money, I want everybody to afford and enjoy my father's and now my place. My son is young and he loves the bar and it is a family place, too." says Bob.

Dominque leans forward and say, "Except on St. Patrick's parade day. It is definitely a adults only. We open at 8.00am with breakfast included and you pay only $10.00 and you can come and go all day. Watch the parade, see the river turn green and have a great time. Yet honestly you would not want your child in here when they are partying all day at St. Patrick's day. They drink, and they have a very rowdy time. Bring them on Saturday or Sunday when we do brunch!" she says laughing, "AND WE HAVE GREAT CHICKEN WINGS."

And of course a lovely way for the men to find women! Ha ha ha. Very smart! Another item I loved about the bar and tell Bob is that my niece owns Maplewood Brewery in Chicago(or her husband Adam does) and Dominique and Bob start laughing.     "Actually I love the beer that they have and that is why we have two on tap. And we had our Christmas party at the brewery pub, the Tap Room at Maplewood, so we know the brewery very well." I tell him I am supposedly the Green Spirit, since all of us are named after their beers, and Dominque and Bob say that at least I'm not the Charlatan, although the Charlatan is actually a very good beer. I say that perhaps I am if they talk about me behind my back and just don't actually tell me!

                              https://butchmcguires.com/

"I carry a lot of the local beers on tap since that is what the tourists ask for and I want to help the local microbreweries. And the beers are very good, such as your cousin's brewery Maplewood. I love their beers. The tourists want something from Chicago. That is why they come here. And I have locals that have been coming to Butch McGuires for the last 40 years. They enjoy the tastes of the different beers, and they actually really enjoy talking to the people from different countries. I think the young people enjoy talking to them too. It isn't a electronic bar. It is a conversational bar and that is the way I want to keep it. We have the best Ruben in the city, too, named after Butch McGuire and of course a Chicago Dog you can get anywhere in the city, but we like to think with our great chef and team of some 40 years that we make the best one. All of our ingredients are 100% homemade everyday. Including every sauce, so I hope you enjoy it."

I could do the Florentine steak, yet it is a simple way to do steak and I would have to compete with all of the famous steakhouses in Chicago which is what Chicago is known for.         The coolest bar, kitchen and restaurant you shall find in Chicago looks very unethnic, although they are all Mexican: the Takito's, Takito Kitchen at 2013 West Division, The Takito Street at 2423 North Lincoln, and The Takito Bar at 201 North Morgan Street. The creative genius behind all 3 of these is the charming energetic Mario Ponce of Chihuahua, Mexico.                    http://bartakito.com/         Bar Takito | Restaurants in West Loop, Chicago
"Here in the area and I don't want to be morbid, yet it is a theater that caught John Dillinger, kind of, so my Takito Street is theater cinema themed. I try to do that with all of my restaurants. The one here has the hanging light bulb lights everywhere and I can adjust the colors constantly. We tend to play a little more here and since it has been only one month, we're still having fun! The marquis style above the open kitchen lets me and my team write some quirky sayings such as the one we have now," says Mario. It says something akin to I CARE ABOUT TACOS AND LIKE 3 PEOPLE! I say that  to the bartender, a gorgeous girl from Colombus Ohio who has been in Chicago one month, as long as the Takito has been opened, that I like about maybe 5 people and she says that she is finding it difficult to find 3. She tells me to try the Takito Bowl that is full of rice and potatoes and salad and my choice of chicken. That is what I try and it is totally healthy, which, although I would of preferred to shove as many nachos as humanly possible into my mouth, I elect to be healthy.
The bartender tells me, as he is literally pouring 21 bottles of tequila into a huge bowl, yes, I said bottles of tequila, "I make a huge amount. It is the way you would make Sangria. It is easy to mix a big batch, and yes to answer you question," (*which question is that you would say?...the question that I asked the Head Bartender, who has been with Mario since Day one of all three Takitos, his name is difficult to say, Jame, pronouces with the J as a H, ...anyway the question that I ask is if recipes of Margaritas are different in different regions of Mexico.)
Jame looks at me incredulous and raises his eyebrow, "Um, Margaritas are Margaritas and every Mexican loves Margaritas!" he says laughing. "Although, I must tell you that the only thing that I have never had here is a Margarita. I make so many of these that I literally can not even drink one!"
"The Takito Bar is the most expensive, probably with the average price per person about $50.00; and the food from each is very different. The Takito Bar has great Margaritas, of course, as all of my restaurants do, and the food is a little more upscale and modern. All Mexican original recipes, though,"says the very happy Boss, Mario, of the three branding Mexican Places that he has enjoyed creating in Chicago. Bar Takito | Restaurants in West Loop, Chicago

Although the Takito Kitchen is the tiny one of all three, it has the greatest real authentic Mexican food, such as the guacamole, which I LOVE... 2013 West Division
"I'm having fun with my restaurants. The recipes are all real Mexican recipes, yet I add my own thoughts along with my chefs. We are creative, yet one thing to note is that I come from the north eastern part of Mexico and grew up eating flour tortillas and most Americans and the rest of Mexico grow up eating corn tortillas. It is just a regional thing. So, in my kitchens I have gluten free tortillas and I have flour tortillas, to give you a little choice. The food is the key. It is amazing, and although at the Takito Street in Lincoln Park, which is only 1 month old and very playful, you can have tacos for $3.00, basically, yet each one is with 100% pure ingredients, as all of my kitchens," says Mario.

"It took awhile for my artist to design the beautiful butterfly mural outside and bring the same pattern inside, but I am thrilled with what he has done. Let's say that I am the visionary of the design and they actually create my vision. So, I guess I am creative too," says the VERY HUMBLE Mario Ponce, at the Takito Street location in Lincoln Park. Bar Takito Restaurant in Chicago | diningchicago.com"In the summer, I am painting John Dillinger behind on the alley brick wall, since that is the place where the real Dillinger was shot!" he says

"My father started the Pub in 1977 and I joined him, basically took it over, in 2009. It's fun. People come in here from the neighborhood and people come from out of state, and out of the country and always want to eat the HotDog since that is basically what we are famous for. I think actually they enjoy it the most along with the Italian beef. The locals eat the hamburgers, the grilled chicken, and try all of the items, but I think mostly the people that are visiting Chicago for the first time always want to try the famous HotDogs. At 2.00am, if you're hungry, you can come here and eat some great food, that is very inexpensive and drink beer along side it. That is very unusual in Chicago since most of the time the Hotdogs aren't sold along with the alcohol. I think at $2.00 a budlight, it is the cheapest place in all of Lincoln Park vicinity: the bars in Lincoln Park might have Happy Hours, but even that is more than our All day hours. Try it here and you'll always come here." The Clark Street Dog Delivery - 3040 N Clark St Chicago | Order Online With Grubhub
See the source imageThe cool family of Clark Street Dog, where I interviewed the son, Angelo, about life in the neighborhood and the history of the Clark Street Dog Pub. I had the first opportunity to try the famous "vienna beef" hotdog, complete with "run the garden". What exactly does that mean? "That means that you add the real brown relish, the tomatoes, the peppers, the pickles with mustard. No ketchup, just mustard and real beef hotdogs. That is the traditional Chicago hotdog and we've been serving it here since 1977, along with the 100% beef hamburgers that were real trendy as 100% beef way before it became the "yuppy gourmet burgers."
"The Taste of Chicago downtown is something we don't do; however, the Taste of Wrigleyville which is not really called that but it is near here and it is a Music festival Memorial Day that is in the Wrigleyville area or the Art festival that is near another neighborhood, we do have tents at these since I feel they are actually better quality festivals and less money for the guests." says Angelo, who is 100% about the quality of the food and not charging his guests a outrageous price. Although being located where he is in the middle of it all and being pretty famous locally for the Chicago-style food, he could do just that.Clark Street Dog - Updated COVID-19 Hours & Services - 226 Photos & 338 Reviews - Hot Dogs - 3040 N Clark St, Lakeview, Chicago, IL - Restaurant Reviews - Phone Number - Menu - Yelp
In terms of history of Chicago, one must absolutely visit Wrigley Field and have a Clark's Street Hotdog, which is exactly what you will eat if you happen to see one of these great Cubby games! While Angelo showed me how to eat a real original one, you can have mustard, relish, onions! The experience is it and you need to do that at least once. Even veggie people!
The locals mingle with people from Europe and United Kingdom, showing their famous Chicago food off!
"You know me and my wife travel to Europe and whenever we tell people where we come from they always tells us that they had been to America, but only New York or Washington DC, Walt Disney World or Los Angelos. They rarely say Chicago, yet when tourists do visit Chicago all they can do is rave about the food and the Lincoln Park Zoo or the Brookfield Zoo or the Navy Pier, the free outdoor concerts at McCormick Place, the Oak Street Beach, the World Famous Shopping and the World Famous Steak Strip of the ChopHouse, Mortons, Ditkas. It is a very famous city and of course we can't forget the Chicago Bears, The Chicago Bulls with Michael Jordan, The Chicago Cubs World Series Champions 2016, The Chicago Whitesox, The Chicago Blackhawks, and the famous Museums. The list goes on and on. I don't think there is a city anywhere in the world that comes close to what Chicago has today," says Angelo.

"I'm a World Traveler myself, with about 6 months of European travel all the way from the arctic circle to Morocco under my belt and when I finished my travels, I went to work in San Francisco for 3 years. During that time, I saw these great tea houses and cafes and decided I would love to do that. To open my own cafe. San Francisco already had so many, that I decided to bring my idea to Chicago. Fate had it that I found a tiny place in Lincoln Park and for 3 years did my own thing. Then the lady who had this building and I met by chance outside the empty space and I opened my cafe here. I love the 1920's theme, and that is entirely me. It didn't even have the wrought iron stair railing when I renovated it. Everything that you see is my vision. Over the years it has evolved from a tiny cafe to the double store front space that it is today. At first when I opened the upstairs, the cafe catered to people willing to stay til 11.00pm or midnight. Now I close at 7.00pm. But, my idea and dream of a Speakeasy, after all of these years as a specialty cafe is emerging.                I can't tell you all of my secrets, but in April to June, I hope to open the speakeasy attached in some way with the cafe. You'll just have to keep coming here to see if you can find it!" says the young very affable owner of Bourgeois Pig, Mason Green.
You can find Bourgeois Pig located at 738 West Fullerton Ave. It has such a lovely old-fashioned space, with it's sandwiches named after famous literary figures, The Great Gatsby, you know those romantic images of days-gone-by. The couches, the chairs, the epitome of comfort and style. On every given day you can find the college student, the book aficionado or just a group of friends hanging out enjoying a cup of coffee that isn't Starbucks. It is a charming independent cafe that has been cared for years and years by the same Bohemian spirit, by the name of Mason Green, a charming kind person who is totally interested in all that you have to say and is full of stories and adventures himself. Bourgeois Pig Cafe, Chicago - Home | Facebook

The Cafe is full of memorabilia of the 1920's and Mason  has no intention of staying stagnant. He still has many more items that he wants to use on his new project of a Speakeasy complete with "I am sure a steel door with eye slats in it to see who is on the other side. A fellow who owns a establishment across from where John Dillinger was gunned down in the alley near my cafe gave me the door. I can safely and truthfully say that at some point in his life, Dillinger used that door!" Now that is cool! The Speakeasy we hope is opened in April, but Mason says that "it better be open at least in June!"
